Same day couriers are very different from freight networks, overnight carriers, parcel couriers and the mail service. Same day couriers are the premier of delivery services and they are specialists at moving awkward or time sensitive, confidential consignments.

1. Know what type of courier service you need.

I was chatting on Facebook the other say with someone who wanted some discs moved from Yorkshire to London. He rang a same day courier with text updates and was quoted ยฃ135. He felt he was being ripped off. I explained that the difference in price was the difference between and… that he understood but he didn’t know what courier service he required until we had spoken.

2. Know the value of what you are sending

Mail services and pallet networks have limited insurance options if something goes wrong. If your item is high value, then you need to send it by same day courier. If you do not wish to have the item insured and the item is not very precious, then use the mail service to send the item.

3. Know the dimensions of your consignments or freight

The mail service will only transport items of a certain size, the bigger the item is the less likely they are to be able to move it. If you check the mail services website they will tell you the maximum dimensions they can move.

4. Know what the items are you are intending to have delivered

The mail service cannot deliver certain types of product, and pallet networks may have to have certain certification to deliver the items. Choosing the correct same day courier service means that you items can be delivered without danger or damage to the other consignments.

5. If in doubt, ask

Your same day courier service should be happy to advise you, if they are not sure of what they can or cannot transport – do not use them. It is your goods/freight that will be impounded if the courier is wrong, find one that is confident and knowledgeable.

Bonus tip:

Giving as much notice as possible gets you the best possible price for your delivery, last minute rush jobs by a UK courier will always be more expensive.
